On my way!

Saturday, July 21, 2007 at 5:53 am (Happenings in KD's life)

Hello, world! Yes, I realize it’s been forever and a day since I’ve updated, but is anyone really surprised? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

Anyway, this is my first official entry on WordPress, since I’ve imported all my other entries from Diaryland. That’s one of the reasons I haven’t written in a while; I wanted all my entries imported before I started new ones. Weird, yes, but that’s how I am. Actually, you wanna know a secret? As of today, I’m nowhere near finished importing everything, but I’m not posting this until I’m done. Another secret? I’m not actually connected to the internet as I write this. Why? Well, I’m on a plain right now, on my way to The Seeing Eye! I’m infectiously excited, despite the fact that it’s not even six in the morning. I’m here. I’m in my seat. I’m on my way!!

All right, the use of “approved electronic devices” is permitted now, so I can keep writing. I love flying, especially in turbulance. Call me crazy, but I think it’s a lot of fun!

Anyway, lots has obviously happened since I updated, so much that I hardly know where to begin. I know! Another list seems to be in order!

  • I went to the NFB National Convention! That was an amazing experience. The NFB is 50,000 strong and so POWERFUL! The March for Independence was amazing as well. I couldn’t help it–I randomly started screaming in the middle of it. The energy was that palpable. I also witnessed Karen win her scholarship, plus a KNFB reader! Those things are awesome, and if you want more info on what that lovely piece of wondrous, fabulous technology is, click here.
  • Mom and I made sushi! It turned out really good, and even Dad, who’s not much for fish, liked it. Amber didn’t, but she’s just boring and unadventurous like that–at least when it comes to food.
  • I saw the fifth Harry Potter movie! It was really good, but I’d still recommend the books to everyone who’s only seen the movies. They’re worth it!
  • In related, though sad, news, I don’t yet have the latest HP book, due to the fact that Bookshare has to scan it in first. It should be up in a matter of hours, however! Bookshare is awesome.
  • In unrelated, though joyous, news, I FINALLY have Kelly’s new album! And it’s… try not to faint with shock here… SUPERAWESOMEFRAGILISTICEXBIALIDOCIOUS!!!! Yeah. It’s that great. You may possibly be treated to a rant about it later on. How lucky you are! Mwahahaha.
  • In other happy news, I ordered the new Strong Bad emails DVD, which should be coming soon! Unfortunately, it’s going to my parents’ house, but perhaps I can persuade them to send it along to me.

Well, that’s all of great significance I can think of for now, as I sit here on Continental aircraft 2130, typing and munching on whatever the heck the flight attendant just gave me. They seem to be little pieces of cinnamon raisin toast or something. They’re decent and I’m inexplicably famished, so I’m pleased.

But yeah, I must sleep now. I had to get up at 3 to catch this flight. I’ll make sure to tell y’all when I get a dog, what his/her name is, and what breed he/she is. See ya later!

Oh, and instead of a parting thought as I’ve done in times of old, I shall now have a favorite song of the entry! This time it shall be “Better Without You” by Ms. Kelly Rowland! (By the way, if you enjoyed the parting thoughts more, comment (on my new, improved, FREE comments page) and tell me!

Some news and a list

Thursday, May 24, 2007 at 1:40 pm (Happenings in KD's life)

  • I’m listening to: The new American Idol, Jordin Sparks! Go girl! Woooooo!
  • Current mood: excited
  • Important dates: Tomorrow, May 25, Dad finally comes home from Missouri!

3 entries a week… right…

Yeah, I know… I am the worst updater ever. Well, that’s not exactly true; I don’t believe Ms. G has updated since March. But you didn’t hear that from me.

So, as you might have guessed, it’s now summer vacation, and I’m incredibly excited for all the events I’ve previously mentioned in this diary. Oh, and I don’t think I’ve told y’all that I’m officially accepted into guide dog school! I know I’ve been saying things like “almost definitely” and “when they review my application” and blah blah blah, but now they have sent me a fancy acceptance letter and a memorandum of exercises to prepare myself for training!

In other news, it doesn’t look like I won an NFB scholarship this year, but that’s OK. I will reapply until I get one, and I’m still going to the convention to march! Also, my very own adopted little sister Karen got one, which makes me very proud. Go Karen!

Hmmm… what else is happening? Oh! My dad has been promoted to Executive General Manager of his restaurant company, which means he gets to oversee like 7 different stores now! The only bad thing about this is he’s gone more often, which makes Mom a little insane. Er, more insane than usual, I mean. Heh heh.

Oh, and also, I must say this, even though I’ve already announced the A.I. winner in my “I’m listening to” section. GOOOOOOO JORDIN!!!! She deserves every bit of the hype. Her voice is lovely and she’s so sweet! I’m totally buying her album. Which brings me to another of my notorious lists:

Upcoming Releases That KD Is Excited For This Summer

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. (Shame on you if you didn’t see that coming.)
  • Kelly Rowland’s sophomore disc, Ms. Kelly. (Yes, she changed the title and the release date. AGAIN. If that happens one more time, I shall scream and throw things. Figuratively, of course.)
  • The fifth DVD of Strong Bad emails. They’re great.
  • Harry Potter And the Order of the Phoenix, the film.
  • Any and all American Idol Season 6 compilations. There was a very talented group of contestants this year, especially the girls.

And that’s it for now. I’m not going to say anything about promising to write sooner, however. We all know how that turns out every single time. But I will shortly post some more File from WAGES 2004 as compensation for my laziness. Parting thought: THIS IS MY NOW!!!!!! (Lyrics to the song Jordin sang that probably had a lot to do with her win last night)

2 days in a row! It’s a miracle!

Tuesday, April 17, 2007 at 9:00 pm (General ramblings)

  • I’m listening to: M2M
  • Current mood: Relaxed
  • Important dates: Tomorrow we’ll see who goes home on American Idol!

Well, hello! It’s a revolution, isn’t it? I’m actually writing entries again!

Not much has changed since yesterday, obviously. I still want a guide dog. I still want HP 7 to come out. So to sum it all up, I still want it to be summer!

Well, Jordin was by far my favorite on A.I. tonight. She rocked the song’s socks off, which is saying something, as it was country. People don’t often rock in country. They… country in country. Wow, that probably made no sense. But she was great, OK? Just take my word for it. I actually agreed with everything Simon said about the contestants tonight, which is kind of surprising. Do I flatter myself when I say I don’t think I’m as mean as he is?

Anyway, just thought I’d make up for my laziness of the past… ever… and try to write at least 3 times a week. I know… quite a tall order for me, but I’ll try! By the way, I’ve raised just under $500 for the NFB so far! If any of the wonderful people who donated on my behalf are reading this, I present you with an E-chocolate bar!

On a much more serious note, here’s my parting thought: MY HEART GOES OUT TO VIRGINIA. (My sister’s friend knows people who go there.)

A survey!

Monday, April 16, 2007 at 5:03 pm (General ramblings)

  • I’m listening to: The original American Idol, Kelly Clarkson!
  • Current mood: Hungry
  • Important dates: I dunno

Hi again! I have decided that in compensation for not updating in so long, I shall do 2 entries in one day. Well, technically this is just a survey I pirated off of MySpace, but I thought it was funny. Basically, you put your music library on shuffle and write the song titles as answers to the questions. Here are my extremely scientific findings!<

  • How are you feeling today? “When I Get There,” Dream
  • Will you get far in life? “How Can I Be Down?”, Toya (Depending on the way you interpret this, it could be a good thing…)
  • How do your friends see you? “Release Me,” Blaque (OK, y’all, we need to have a talk…)
  • Will you get married? “What Hurts the Most,” Rascal Flatts (Somehow that doesn’t sound promising…)
  • What is your best friend’s theme song? A medley of songs from Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen (Hahahahaa, wonder who this describes? *cough*Mary*cough*)
  • What is the story of your life? “Feelin’ the Same Way,” Norah Jones
  • What was high school like? “You Don’t Mean Anything,” Simple Plan (Haha, too true)
  • How can you get ahead in life? “Fun Fun Fun,” The Beach Boys (Yes! I’m liking this!)
  • What is the best thing about your friends? “The Strong Badia National Anthem,” Strong Bad (Ummmmm…)
  • What is in store for this weekend? “Me Vs. the World,” Halo Friendlies (Ooh, that doesn’t sound too cool…)
  • To describe your grandparents? “I See Right Through To You,” DJ Encore
  • How is your life going? “I Love Life,” Melissa Lefton (That, my friend, is awesome.)
  • What song will they play at your funeral? “Castles In the Air,” B*Witched (Hey, it’s pretty!)
  • How does the world see you? “Before Me and You,” SHeDaisy
  • Will you have a happy life? “Stuck,” Stacie Orrico (Um, do I want to know what that means?)
  • What do your friends really think of you? “This Is How I Feel,” Earth, Wind and Fire (Well, that doesn’t tell me much.)
  • Do people secretly lust after you? “Where Are You,” Natalie
  • How can I make myself happy? “Goin’ Downtown,” Dreamgirls Soundtrack (Well, I’ll be on the bus shortly, then!)
  • What should you do with your life? “Can’t Stop,” Hanson
  • Will you ever have children? “Life Is Wonderful,” Jason Mraz

Well, there you go. See ya later!

Guess what? I’m not dead: Part II!

Monday, April 16, 2007 at 1:13 pm (Happenings in KD's life)

  • I’m listening to: The voices in my head
  • Current mood: Well-rested for once!
  • Important dates: Tuesday, May 1 is when Dreamgirls comes out on DVD!

Well, my poor, dear reader(s), I regret to inform you that it has happened again. I have once more let my life become so packed with other stuff, I have neglected this diary for nearly 2 months! I have officially broken all previously-held records with this long stretch between entries.

Well. So much has happened to me, I hardly know where to start. Hmmmmmm… I believe another of my famous lists is in order!

  1. I am now 5 weeks away from the end of the semester! And as much as I love the college life, I have a very exciting summer ahead of me, so I cannot wait for it to end. Now I shall make a sublist detailing the events!
    • A. Seeing my bestest friends after months and months of being apart!
    • B. My nineteenth birthday!
    • C. The release of Kelly’s sophomore album, which I’ve been eagerly anticipating for over a year!
    • D. The NFB National Convention, which includes the March for Independence! (If you want more info on that, click here.)
    • E. My almost-definite trip to New Jersey for guide dog training!
    • F. And of course, the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which I’ve been eagerly anticipating since… well, I don’t even remember. Now back to the regular list.
  2. My trip to Baltimore, which I told you about in my entry from millennia ago, was SOOO much fun! Also, traveling there by plane with Karen was exciting! It was our first time going such a long distance without adults, and we felt very special. It also gave me a vindictive sense of pleasure that I managed alone in an airport, despite the fact that certain members of my family believed I couldn’t.
  3. I’ve sent my last medical form to The Seeing Eye, so now all they need to do is look over it, and if they approve, I’m in! This is, without a doubt, the most eagerly-anticipated event in my whole life!
  4. I’ve registered for classes next fall, and am starting German and piano lessons! Yay!
  5. I recently purchased the new deluxe edition of Beyoncé’s latest CD, and it has Spanish tracks on it! As can be imagined, this is pure, undiluted excitement for a Beyoncé fanatic/modern languages major.

OK! So now that you have the list of glorious events that have happened in KD’s life, I must dash. I need to get ready for choir, which is in 30 minutes. I will reeeeeeally try to update much sooner this time… Parting thought: QUÉ SABES TU DE MÍ? NO ME HAGAS REÍR! (Anyone have doubts about where that’s from? I thought not.)

Guess what? I’m not dead!!!!!

Thursday, February 22, 2007 at 10:46 pm (Happenings in KD's life)

  • I’m listening to: Craig David. The guy has a delicious voice.
  • Current mood: Tired of writing dang papers!
  • Important dates: Um… last Wednesday was Valentine’s Day…

Hello. Do you remember me? Once, in an age far gone, I updated this diary at least once every other week. Then an ominous thing called homework (2 group presentations, 2 research papers, and a frightening amount of French grammar exercises) got in the way. And, er, maybe some laziness too. I suppose I can’t blame it on my cafeteria’s crunchy lasagna, either…

Anyway, I think I’ve set a new record, y’all. This is officially the longest I’ve gone without updating you guys on the wonderful, terrific, fantabulous story of KD’s life. I profoundly apologize for any grief, frustration, disappointment, Pink Eye, influenza, or any other afflictions I may have caused to befall my darling reader(s).

Anyway.

Here I am, almost done with my fifth week of college and loving it! Getting around the campus becomes easier by the day, and I’m meeting awesome people. Like the girl who wants me to join her sorority and therefore invited me to a Mardi Gras party where they had chocolate-covered strawberries; the 2 readers I have for French; the girl who watched a (very lame) movie with me for class; and my reader for Spanish who enjoys making fun of me at every possible opportunity.

I shall now, as a compensation for not updating this diary in eons, describe my new college life in more detail for you.

I really like my Spanish class. The teacher is fun and lively; she reminds me a lot of one of my teachers in high school. Like I mentioned before, I have a reader for that class (someone who dictates homework assignments out of the textbook for me). His name is Jeremy, and he’s a technology nerd. He also enjoys mocking me. You may be surprised, but I’m OK with that. What I enjoy most is being treated like a regular person, not the poor little blind girl.

My Alternative Societies course has to be my least favorite. I just got done writing a paper about the lame film adaptation of the book we read. ‘Twas not fun. I did, however, take a break to watch American Idol, and Jordin’s still in the competition! Yeah!!!

My French class is also great. The teacher is very willing to work with me, and one of my readers in that class is an actual foreign exchange student. That’s cool because I can ask her things like, “Do you guys really say ‘les couriers electronique’ when referring to email?” (For the record, they don’t.)

My speech class is OK. The teacher’s cool, and I didn’t fail my first test! Booya! However, the guy who reads my textbook on CD sounds as if he has a mouth full of saliva. It’s rather disgusting.

I have the same teacher for both women’s choir and voice lessons and she’s awesome! It’s funny, though, because we’ll be talking about something totally relevant to the music we’re doing, then she’ll go off on a tangent and not remember how the heck she got so off-topic in the first place. For my individual voice lessons, I’m singing 2 English songs, 1 Ave Maria (which is in Latin, obviously), and a gorgeous piece of French poetry. ‘Tis very exciting.

In other news:

  1. A representative from The Seeing Eye is totally coming to visit me a week from today!!!! If he approves of my cane skills, I’m totally getting a dog in July!!!!! Sadly, my class will start on the 21st, the release date of Harry Potter 7… but hey, I can multi-task
  2. Not only am I going to Atlanta this summer for the NFB convention, I’m also going to Baltimore over spring break for an NFB seminar, all expenses paid!!! I love the NFB…
  3. Beyoncé kicked BUTT when she performed at the Grammys, and she won one as well! She’s also going to be on the Academy Awards this Sunday, and I believe she’s nominated for Best Actress or something.
  4. I’m really tired and think I should go to bed before I keel over and fall asleep atop my keyboard.

I swear I shall update sooner! Parting thought: ‘CAUSE THEY MINE! AND THEY GOOD!!! (Quote from Bubs, a character on Homestar Runner)

First college entry!

Thursday, January 25, 2007 at 9:25 pm (Happenings in KD's life)

  • I’m listening to: Old-school Destiny’s Child
  • Current mood: Tiiiired
  • Important dates: Saturday, January 27, I get to sleep in!

Well, hi! I know, I know, I’ve broken the pattern of updating on Wednesdays. I just didn’t feel like updating yesterday because I was exhausted.

Anyway, I’m in college now! It’s been a little overwhelming adjusting to this new lifestyle, but I’m beginning to get used to it. I still have some issues with getting lost on the campus, but that’s OK. I’m learning!

I really like my schedule, though! Taking Spanish and French at the same time is really fun! I have Spanish at 9 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and French at noon on every day except Friday. It’s taken me a while to switch from one language to another, but I’m getting better.

Anyway, I’m still really tired, but I thought I’d update you guys on my new college life! I’ll write more soon! Parting thought: MELISSA! HOW DARE YOU BATHE YOURSELF!!! (Screamed by someone in my dorm. I have no idea why)

Another pattern

Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at 10:50 am (General ramblings)

  • I’m listening to: Mandy Moore
  • Current mood: Refreshed from a good sleep
  • Important dates: Monday the 15th, apart from being Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, was my daddy’s birthday!

Hello! Now I seem to be developing a pattern of updating only on Wednesdays, huh?

Anyway, I’ve graduated from SISTA and am spending a week at home before I go to college. Hopefully I’ll be able to get something arranged with Mary today, since I haven’t seen her in ages.

Hmmmm, what else can I write about? Oh, my commencement meal went very well! Everyone liked my food, and it made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I watched American Idol last night, and it was great! If I do succeed in buying a reasonably-priced TV for my dorm room, I’m going to watch it all the way through! Oh, and did I tell you that there’s a toll-free number I can call that gives me TV listings?! I personally think that’s the best thing that happened since Dreamgirls!

Well, I suppose that’s all for now. Keep those pointless comments coming, Kaitlin! And whoever else! Parting thought: LOOK AT ME, MISTA, I’M A STAR!!! (Yeah, another quote from Dreamgirls)

I’m developing a biweekly pattern…

Wednesday, January 10, 2007 at 7:55 pm (Happenings in KD's life)

  • I’m listening to: Atomic Kitten
  • Current mood: Tired
  • Important dates: Friday, January 12, is my graduation!

What do you know? It’s been 2 weeks again! Oops…

Well, dear readers, I am graduating from SISTA on Friday. *Tear* I shall miss all my friends a lot. I’m sure I’ll make new friends in college, but I have a feeling they won’t be quite as interested in discussing the BrailleNote Vs. Pacmate debate.

Well, let’s see. I had a whole list of things that happened since I last wrote, but I’ve forgotten some of them. Except this one: KD FINALLY SAW DREAMGIRLS!!!! I don’t think I need to give my opinion on it, but I will anyway. AWESOME MOVIE!!! I did not know Jennifer Hudson could act as well as sing, and I didn’t know Eddie Murphy could sing as well as act! And Beyoncé was awesome, of course. I can honestly say that “Listen,” the song she sings toward the end, is one of the best songs I have ever heard.

Oh, another thing that happened? I had to call the police the night before last! The people upstairs were blasting some kind of megabass stereo at like midnight again, and I. Had. Had. Enough! I wanted to sleep! It worked, too! The silence was golden and wonderful.

Oh! And another thing: I survived my final Drop! I did miss one bus and had to wait for another in the slightly cold weather, and I did run across some dead-end streets that caused me to have to take several detours, but I still got back alive! Tomorrow is when I cook a big meal for 10 people, which should be fun. I made the dessert today. It’s a pistachio cake, and the batter was so sticky that when I took the mixer out of the bowl, the dough kind of stuck to the beaters in one sticky glob. It tastes quite good, however.

I’m slightly worried about the fate of my shop project, though. Mike has been sick all this week, and I still have a few things to do with it before it’s done. Oh well, I can always come back for a couple hours!

Anyway, I suppose I should gather all my stuff together into something that resembles an organized manner, as I’ll be moving out soon. I’ll try to write again before I start college on the 22nd! Parting thought: EVEN AN AMATEUR LIKE FRICKIN MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. HAS HIS OWN ALBUM! AND HE CAN’T EVEN SING!!! (Spoken by Effie White, the character played by Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls)

Post-Christmas thoughts

Wednesday, December 27, 2006 at 11:30 am (Happenings in KD's life)

  • I’m listening to: Beyonce. She just hit a crazy high note; it was cool.
  • Current mood: Happiful
  • Important dates: Tomorrow, the 28th, is Amber’s 20th birthday! Scary…

Hellooooooo people! It’s been exactly 2 weeks since I last updated! And guess what? I’m no longer sick! I shouldn’t be using exclamation marks so liberally when people are starving in China. Yes, that quote is from The Dark Lord’s Blog. You should check it out if you’re a Harry Potter fan; it’s pretty great.

Speaking of Harry, did you know the name of the 7th book has officially been announced?! I won’t say it here in case some of y’all want to find it on J.K. Rowling’s site, but it fills me with great joy. Unfortunately, there is not a release date for the book yet.

Anyway, I’m home for the holidays, and I’m having quite a splendid time. I got great Christmas gifts, including some lotion, clothes, money, new memory for my computer, and some radio shows from J, who actually delivered them in person! That was cool. Oh, and Amber made me a blanket! I wasn’t expecting that, but I love it. It’s really soft and fuzzy and fabulous.

In more depressing news (for me, at least), I haven’t yet seen Dreamgirls because it’s not in any of the theaters around here, which reeeeally makes me mad. I spent like half an hour looking up theaters on the internet and calling numbers last night, but I was finally forced to the unhappy conclusion that theaters around here suck and I should just give up. However, the theater that’s on the same block as my SISTA apartment has it, so I’ll have to wait until January when I go back. I can probably stand that if I grit my teeth and fight the unendurable frustration. OK… exaggeration. And I guess I can still listen to the soundtrack, which is AWESOMISTIC!!!!

Hmmmm, what else has happened lately? Oh, we got to babysit Amber’s friend’s puppy for a couple of days! His name was Mavric, he was 4 months old, and he was crazy! He didn’t like being outside on a leash while Mom and I were in the house, so he chewed through his collar and leash! And instead of making a grand escape, he decided to follow my mom into the garage. She scolded him a little, then let him in the house, where he proceeded to run in circles chasing his tail. When his master came to get him, he was curled up beside the couch, completely exhausted with the morning’s events. I love puppies.

Well, I suppose I should take a shower and actually do stuff today. Dad wants to take me on a motorcycle ride, which should be fun. I’ll write sometime sooner than 2 weeks from now! Maybe. Parting thought: I HAVE A NEW FUZZY SWEATER!!!!!
